Germany assistant coach Hans-Dieter Flick revealed he had a bet before the 3-2 win over Portugal that his team would score from a set-piece. In the event, they got two as they powered into the semi-finals after profiting from a tactical switch that brought in two holding midfielders and allowed Germany's own attackers to excel in a 4-2-3-1 system. As for Portugal's outgoing coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, he was left to lament his side's failure to defend set-pieces, declaring: "We lost because we didn't do things properly."
