AS Saint-Etienne have signed centre-back Sébastien Puygrenier from fellow UEFA Cup contenders AS Nancy-Lorraine for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of €5m.
Four-year contract
The 26-year-old has agreed a contract running until summer 2012 after completing a medical. He made 139 league appearances for Nancy as won the 2005/06 French League Cup after joining in 2003 from Stade Rennais FC, who were hoping to re-sign him this summer to replace Olympique Lyonnais-bound John Mensah. Puygrenier also mulled over an offer from UEFA Cup holders FC Zenit St. Petersburg as well as Paris Saint-Germain FC but opted to moved to St-Etienne, who will enter their first European competition in 27 years in the first round after finishing fifth in Ligue 1 last season, one place behind Nancy.
