Man of the Match

Merkel's advice

Sat beside Schweinsteiger for Monday's Group B decider in Vienna, German chancellor Angela Merkel had also given him some sage advice. "She told me what to do and I took her advice," Schweinsteiger revealed. "She first told me not to do anything stupid again, which I did not do. Then she said I should play in the same way I did two years ago. What can you do? If the chancellor asks you to do something, you have to obey!"

Part of the UEFA Techinical Team, former Poland coach Jerzy Engel, explained why they singled out Schweinsteiger. "Today he was involved with three goals," Engel said. "The boy played fantastically in the first half. He created a lot of very good action for the team and gave them a lot of psychological strength, which is very important. This is why we decided to pick him. It is always like this – the player who comes back after a suspension wants to show how good he is, to show he deserves his place on the pitch. He showed everything that is most beautiful about football today in this game – passion, technique and a game which gave pleasure to all the fans."
