United quality gives Neville hope

Gary Neville believes Manchester United FC possess the talent and desire to become the first team since AC Milan in 1990 to retain the European Champion Clubs' Cup. The English club defeated Chelsea FC to lift their third European crown in Moscow in May, and are now looking forward to setting out on the road to Rome 2009 with the intention of becoming the first club to win consecutive UEFA Champions Leagues since the new format was introduced in the early 1990s. "We have to make sure we go for it again and I'm desperate to be part of it," the right-back told MUTV. "I think we are better equipped than in 1999 [to retain the trophy]. The strength of the squad is enormous. I do feel we are in a better position but we have to show that mentality and show we can do it again. No Manchester United team has been able to do that." Sir Alex hopeful Neville's manager Sir Alex Ferguson is another who cannot wait for the new season to get under way. "I think we've got a good team and there's some development still to come," he said. "There are some young players who for a period last season did very well, and for a period showed their youthfulness by being inconsistent. Those young players will come on a bundle now. That triumph of winning the league and the European Cup can only help us. Players like Anderson, Nani, [Wayne] Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo will emerge from that without doubt, and be really top players for us. We're pleased at their progress." source
